When did you first develop an interest in photography?

My very first introduction to a camera was at a young age, when I lived on a farm with eight cats. They were my first models: with glasses on their noses or cozily in the stroller. I could entertain myself with them for hours. When I was eighteen, I spent a summer vacation in England as an au pair. On weekends, I took the train to London, where my love for photography began. I still had a small Coolpix camera at the time and was fascinated by abstractions, compositions, and faces. It was a journey of discovery in the world of image and light.

״Analog photography really taught me to observe. ״

How did your photography evolve from there?

After the summer holiday, I started studying mathematics in Utrecht. I signed up for the photography committee, which gave me the opportunity to capture musicals, intro camps, and other events with a professional camera from a fellow student. For my twentieth birthday, my boyfriend (at the time) gave me an analog camera. This was truly the best gift I could have received, as it opened up a whole new world for me. Analog photography really taught me to see, take my time, anticipate the moment, and notice the fine details. Nowadays, I photograph digitally, but that analog foundation has forever shaped my perspective on photography.

Where did your love for art begin?

My parents are both very artistic, with my dad being especially influential in my creative journey. We lived in a home surrounded by canvases and art pieces. My parents, fans of Gustav Klimt, had a striking piece of art featuring a naked woman hanging above our dining table. I'll never forget my best friend's innocent question when we were younger: "Why is there a naked lady above the dining table staring at me?. Yet, years later, as she developed her own love for art, she chuckled and remarked that my parents - perhaps a bit peculiar - were great for doing that. I’m indeed grateful to have grown up in an environment where art was all around me.

Gustav Klimt - the painting I grew up with, hanging above our dining table.

From a young age, my parents also introduced us to the world of cinema, often taking us to art theaters where we could experience some incredible films on the big screen. One movie that had a profound impact on me at age 17 was Samsara (2011), which expanded my perspective in a way I can't quite put into words.

I also consider myself incredibly fortunate to be the daughter of a true hippie. Born in the late 40s, my dad was deeply immersed in the 60s, 70s and 80s. He has an extensive vinyl collection, and we grew up listening to all the classics. Artists like Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Baez, Queen, The Beatles were an important part of my upbringing. Music's power to evoke vivid emotions and transport you to stunning places is incredible. In my view, music is closely tied to the heart of art, and I'm glad it's a part of LARTA as well.

What advice would you give to other aspiring artists?

Stay true to that creative spark within you. Give it the space to grow, keep moving forward. Art is a living process – don’t let it stand still, and don’t let doubt hold you back. It requires time, attention, and dedication to fully unfold. That is exactly why I founded LARTA. I believe in the power of art, and I believe every artist should take their craft seriously. Art is not only an expression of creativity but also of craftsmanship and dedication. My goal is to support artists and ensure their work reaches a wider audience, allowing their stories and vision to inspire people.

What is art to you?

For me, art is all-encompassing. It is the sun shining through your window, the smile of a stranger, the seemingly ordinary, a crooked pole, or the wrinkles in the hands of an elderly person. Art is the gentle force that touches us, that softens us and inspires us. Art moves me - whether it’s through the stunning performance of an actor, the subtle details of a photograph, stunning melodies or the colors in a painting. Art reminds me of the importance of living passionately, of creating what you believe in, and of feeling something deep when you experience it. Art is the gentle power that touches us, that softens us, and inspires us.
